No, Blake Shelton did not cancel a $30 million project with CMT in solidarity with fellow country star Jason Aldean following controversy over his new song. This report, which some are taking as fact, comes from a fake article on a satirical news site.

Fake Article Claims Blake Shelton Supports Jason Aldean

Aldean has recently been under fire for his song “Try That in a Small Town.” The song’s music video featured protest footage while Aldean sang, “‘Got a gun that my granddad gave me / They say one day they’re gonna round up / Well, that sh*t might fly in the city, good luck.”

The video was pulled from CMT after critics said it promoted gun violence and racism. According to an article by the Dunning-Kruger Times, Shelton backed out of a $30 million project with the network in a show of support for Aldean.

The only problem? The Dunning-Kruger Times is a satire site, and the story was completely made up. However, that didn’t stop some social media users from believing it and praising Shelton for supporting his fellow country star.

As one Twitter user pointed out, the site’s “About Us” page states, “Everything on this website is fiction. It is not a lie and it is not fake news because it is not real. If you believe that it is real, you should have your head examined.”

I love how conservatives are trending Blake Shelton for canceling a $30m deal w/CMT because Jason Aldean is a friend… when the site the 'article' is from is satire, and says so right on its 'About Us' page. "Everything on this website is fiction." Morons. 😆 pic.twitter.com/BMYnSNT5kh

TMZ points out that, although Shelton and Aldean have been friendly in the past, Shelton has not commented publicly on the recent controversy. And he’s not the only country star who has been roped into the situation through satirical articles.

Another article claimed that Luke Bryan had pulled his videos from CMT in support of Aldean. The story added that fellow country singer Toby Keith was considering doing the same. This is true of neither musician.

Hank Williams Jr. was the subject of another made-up story, claiming he resigned from CMT’s Board of Directors. This is also not true, but that didn’t stop some people online from believing it.
